Acrylic Paints Versus Oil Paints
What is the difference between acrylic paints and oil paints? The biggest difference the user will find is the drying time. Acrylic paints dry within minutes and oil paints can take up to several months to completely dry. The other difference is that acrylic paints can be cleaned and thinned with water. They are non-toxic and have little odor, resulting in fewer people having allergic reactions to them. Oil painting seem to still be valued higher than the acrylics, mostly due to the historical use of oils. Acrylics are newer and have not yet stood the test of time, but as time goes on, it has become increasingly clear that they will survive the test and perhaps will even surpass oils as archival champions. Acrylic paints can be used in the same manner as watercolor paints by making thin washes or used in the to resemble oil paints with the thick and creamy paint straight from the tube. They can be used on almost any surface from paper and canvas to woods, metal and glass. Many professional artists have switched from oils to acrylics bringing a lot of credibility to them. There are different grades of acrylic paints from student to professional and there are also craft and decorative types of acrylic paint. |
